What every business can do:
Childhood obesity is an epidemic in Canada. Everyone, including business, has the responsibility to take steps to stop this epidemic.
We hope that every business will view health as a core element of strategic business plans and think about how they can increase children's access to healthy food and beverages and increase children's physical activity.
Here are examples of how business can be part of the solution:
Food and beverage retailers, manufacturers and distributors
- Remove all products classified as “Not Recommended” under the Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in B.C. Schools from vending machines and food outlets
- Promote produce and other fresh, healthy items in all neighbourhoods, especially low-income neighborhoods and ethnically diverse communities.
- Add fruit and vegetables to children's meals and limit fat and sugar
- Ensure affordable healthy foods and beverages on options on all menus
- Promoting locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as other fresh, healthy foods
- Place healthy items at grocery check-out counters
- Ensure the availability of affordable healthy foods and beverages at sports, movie, and other entertainment venues.
All Businesses
- Invest in physical activity facilities and programs for children
- Promote physical activity by providing facilities, equipment, and personnel for community use
- Invest in healthy eating programs for children
- Avoid sponsorships/partnerships with companies who sell unhealthy food and beverages
- Institute workplace wellness activities and educate employees about childhood obesity and the importance of healthy eating and physical activity for children
